Less than a month later, Chico was selected as the location. On June 24, 1887, General John Bidwell donated 8 acres (3.2 hectares) of land from his cherry garden. In 1935, the Bidwell Hall became the center of entertainment and studenthood – the first student union. In 1948, a dormitory for 500 male students was established on the west side of Warner Street. In 2005, student Matt Carrington was humiliated and killed in a Chi Tau (local) house, which was expelled from the university in 2001 for breaking the law. [10] Carrington died of water poisoning during a bullying involving victims being forced to exercise and drinking large amounts of water.
